Hello world!

Spring seems to say, “Hello world!” It begins as a whisper here in
Wisconsin as green grass creeps out from beneath receding snow and
pussy willows burst forth fuzzy catkins. In a few weeks time, it reaches a crescendo as marshes are filled with the whistles and musical trills of red-winged blackbirds mixed with the hoarse croaks and ascending peeps of frogs.

Spring brings a sense of wonderment. We marvel at the first delicate crocus blooms peeking through the snow and are amazed at the keen hearing of the robins that sit patiently on lawns with their heads turned to the ground listening for worms.  We emerge from our homes, shed our winter coats, and flock to our favorite parks to soak up the rays of the warming sun.

It is all a matter of perspective. While 50 degrees last fall had us feeling a little glum as we searched for our hats and gloves, now it makes us feel as spirited and chirpy as the flocks of birds in the trees. Some people are nearly giddy, sporting shorts and t-shirts for their stroll in the park. By the end of June, we will barely take notice of the lush green foliage of trees and bushes. But right now, we take pleasure in watching the progression of buds swelling on branches and tiny leaves emerging.

I’m thankful for our four seasons in Wisconsin. Sure, I will be among the people grumbling at the bitter cold temperatures come January. But for now, I plan to savor the sights, sounds, and smells of spring.
